Okay. Hello everybody. Does this actually work? It seems to work. So, I'm going to
Great. It's my pleasure to welcome you to the course in artificial intelligence 2
Just to get like a quick feel for things who of you has taken artificial intelligence 1 before?
Okay, anyone who hasn't
Okay, more than I would have expected and that's perfectly fine
This is definitely not going to be statistically representative but
Who of you is in the master's program in artificial intelligence?
Okay, who is in the master's program in data science?
That's also quite a few computer science
Bachelor's computer science
You're the only one congratulations ah, too. Okay. Sorry
Okay, great
So just that I get a like rough feel of what I can vaguely estimate what your prior knowledge should be
To get things out of the way, you know that AI 1 and AI 2 both
Have historically been held by professor Michael Kolhase for the last couple of years
Professor Kolhase is on a sabbatical this semester
Being the person that he is he's not using that sabbatical to like actually go on a holiday like other people would
Instead he's currently in Bangalore and after that he will be in bond to organize a three-month workshop on formal mathematics
It's somewhat of a cliche that professors don't seem to be able to stop working ever and he's definitely one of those
But the good news is that in his absence, I'm going to take over this course
I'm quite familiar with the topic
I was here when professor Kolhase and his team including me moved to Erlangen in 2016
I started out as a PhD student in his group in 2015
So I was already somewhat involved back then in designing this whole course both AI 1 and AI 2
I TA'd it from 2016 to approximately 2019 when I did my dissertation
For those of you I'm not going to ask but for those of you who have taken AI 2 before
Also those online I should warn you that while I have
Adopted all of the course materials from professor Kolhase. I've also taken the liberty of changing a couple of things
In particular because I figured this is a good opportunity to go over the whole course stuff
Figure out the kinds of things that did not work well over the last couple of years and try to improve things
That's mostly a couple of definitions that I felt were kind of hand wavy which I figured I could make more precise
I've changed some notations that have not really worked well
That was very noticeable in some exams
So I would hope that I did all of that to your benefit
But be warned if you look at the older course materials from the last couple of years all of which are still online and
Which you can easily find and that some of the notations will have changed
And of course, that's also relevant for the exam at the end of the year
So if some of you have taken this course before you should familiarize yourself with the newer content just
Yeah, so that you actually have a better chance of passing the exam
Having said all of that
I'm currently working on my habillitation and I'm mentioning that because teaching is naturally part of the requirements you have to do in order to
Abilitate which also means that you should take the course evaluation seriously
And I say that not as a means to gain your sympathy or in the sense of please go easy on me or anything like that
It's more that there's a not entirely ill-founded belief usually that all of these course evaluations don't matter much
Which is true to some extent if you have the kind of professor who's been like doing the same course for the last 10 years
Who is stuck in their ways and who's not going to change anything anyway
This is not the case for me. I'm doing this for the first time
So I actually do appreciate your honest feedback and that very much includes criticism
So having said all of that
We've managed to jump over the first hurdle
